Today is the American Diabetes Association’s Alert Day. This is a one-day wake-up call for the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.
♦ Recent estimates suggest that as many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050, unless we take action now
♦ Nearly 1 in 3 American adults have prediabetes.
I Ignored The Wake-Up Call
I was prediabetic for nearly 3 years before I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2011. I did not take the early warning seriously, and I did little to improve my health. I regret my laziness.
Type 2 diabetes can be managed through nutrition and exercise; the things we should be doing even if we are not at risk for diabetes. Making these lifestyle changes as a prediabetic may help you avoid diabetes. The difference between taking action early and waiting until you are diagnosed may be your body’s long-term ability to produce insulin. Health begins with awareness.
